AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A student was arrested Monday at the Performance Learning Center on Walton Way after he was found with a gun, according to authorities.

The student was in Room 220 when he was found with a Glock semi-automatic firearm, according to authorities.

According to an arrest warrant, the incident occurred at noon.

A Richmond County School System police officer retrieved the firearm from the side of a wool hat he was sitting on. according to the arrest warrant.

The Richmond County School System said in a letter to parents that the gun was found after an altercation between him and another student.

The student was charged with weapons in a school building/grounds/functions and possession of a handgun by a person under 18 years old, and he was in Richmond County jail on Tuesday, according to jail records.

The school district said the incident is also being addressed by the Richmond County Board of Education Code of Student Conduct and Discipline.
