AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - We have an update on the steps being taken to bring a Georgia State Veterans cemetery to Augusta.

The Augusta Commission has agreed to build a road connecting Tobacco Road to the new cemetery location at the East Central Regional Hospital at Gracewood. The location could provide an estimated 100,000 burials or more.

But before leaders break ground, they’re waiting for final approval by the state with the exact boundaries of the cemetery.

Those details will be laid out by the State Board of Veterans Services on June 22, then the application will go before the VA. That application must be submitted to the VA for approval before July 1. If approved this year, the cemetery could be open in the next three to four years.
