EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGHT) - Columbia County officials say the new Gateway Boulevard Extension is now open to through traffic.

This 1.5-mile extender now connects Gateway Boulevard at Partnership Drive to Gateway Boulevard at Wrightsboro Road.

The project begins near the Columbia County Exhibition Center and continues as a 4-lane section with planted median for ½ mile to a new roundabout, which will have permanent lighting in the future.

The roundabout will serve as the future main intersection to Columbia County’s 75-acre parcel between I-20 and Kettle Creek Plantation subdivision.

From the roundabout, the project is reduced to a three-lane section for a mile to a new intersection at Wrightsboro Road. The Wrightsboro improvements include a new traffic signal, turn lanes for the new intersection, and a left turn lane for Brigadier Landing subdivision.

Local roadwork this week

  • There will be lane closures all week on Lewiston Road in Columbia County. Authorities say the area of Mill Branch Road to Mill Creek Lane will be down to one lane from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily starting today. Officials say find a different route if you can. Make sure to watch for flaggers directing traffic.
  • On Tuesday, there will be repairs to concrete chipping in the right lane of eastbound Interstate 20 at mile marker 184.5. A single lane will close for a few hours.
  • From Tuesday through Thursday, there will be concrete joint sealing on the I-520 flyover ramp to I-20. A separate crew will add sealant to various locations from the vicinity of Wheeler Road to the I-20 east/westbound ramp split. Drivers can expect lane shifts and reduced speed limits from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
